China turns 60 this week on October 1, 2009. It is a big deal everywhere we look, on campus, on TV, and in the students minds. Beijing is planning a huge celebration military parade through the main East-west avenue of the city. We are planning to watch the whole thing on TV to share in the experience with so many nationals. China has changed a lot of the last 60 years. I could only imagine what some of the older generation has seen with their own eyes and live through to tell the story. Please remember China this week as she continues to grow into the country she will become.

Tuesday Time

With the semester fully underway now, we are hosting students to our home in the effort to get to know them better (as well as help to improve their English and increase class participation). This week, we hosted a group of class monitors and their friends to a finger food feast, including pigs-in-a-blanket, ham & cheese sandwiches, watermelon, and Mississippi mud pies. Monitors are elected students among their classmates who serve as a liaison better the staff of professors and the students. They serve as a key contact in the class. Please remember the relationships with the class monitors throughout the semester that it may be fruitful in business and personal issues.

“You’re not Steve,” was the first thing the students told me as I walked to the front of the classroom. It’s true, Steve’s their teacher, but so am I. The semester was off just like every other one in China with questions about the teaching schedule and textbooks. All the questions have been answered (btw, the textbook was correct too) and the semester has begun here at Harbin Engineering University. This year I’m tag-team teaching Senior students American Literature with Steve and Robin. We are examining famous works of American Literature through the lens of modernization with the hope of truly determining if becoming modern is all it’s cracked up to be. Please remember the students as they begin their final year of studies here; ask for open hearts and minds as we challenge old ideas and share good news.

We’re here! Thank you for all your thoughts on our behalf as we traveled around the world. The flights were great, Kanyon was good, and he followed all his parents’ instructions (sit in your seat and no poop on the plane). Please remember the resettlement into our lives here in Harbin. While we do know the neighborhood and vendors, we still go through a little adjustment phase as we unpack our bags. Also remember the students as they begin to arrive on campus and prepare for the semester.
